July Book Round Up

Although July was event slower than June, that’s just life sometimes. I made it through two books and one I really enjoyed and the other was just mostly ok.

  1. Book 2 of Alexander McCall Smith’s 44 Scotland Street series is called Espresso Tales and it was just as delightful as the first. Following wee 7-year old Bertie Pollock more specifically was a highlight, though I do rather enjoy the storyline focusing on Pat.
  2. I first heard of Waist Deep by Linda Maja Ernst when I saw a review in the NYT with the tagline, “Linea Maja Ernst is polyamorous, but her wife isn’t. Although they love each other, they still haven’t quite “figured it out,” much like some of the characters in her debut novel.” and it caught my attention. Although I think this is a good description of the characters in her debut novel, it was more about the inner turmoil of the characters and their views on relationships, than actual poly relationships outright. I did enjoy this, because representation matters and seeing these kinds of stories is fantastic, but it wasn’t quite what I expected. I hope to discuss it in a book club chat if anyone else on the discord reads it.

There you have it. Finished 2…now for August, where I started several books, and finished none. I’ll talk about that tomorrow, though.

On the Bonnie Bonnie Banks of Loch Lomond

I actually haven’t been to Loch Lomond yet, on this trip, but it’s on the list! Hello, hello! I am SLACKING. I owe y’all June, July, and August book round ups (confession: I don’t think I finished a single one in August actually?!) and at the minimum, an UPDATE on where I am! I also have a nearly finished post on community, friendship, endings, etc. ready to go. I’ve also been toying with the idea of starting a podcast? Is that crazy? Maybe. We’ll see. Anyway, I moved to Scotland – that’s the big news I needed to follow up on. Of course, it’s a temporary move, but we are finally settled now, 8 weeks in, and I can’t imagine leaving in January. I absolutely love it.
